Top 2 Skin Reactions To Products

skin reactionsEven as much as we wish it wouldn’t happen, some of the beauty, skin, and hair products we use can result in skin reactions. It can be hard to predict if a product is going to result in a reaction from our skin. This is why things often come down to trial and error. However, how do you know if it’s a skin reaction or just an ineffective product?

We have you covered in this article, with the top 2 skin reactions to various hair, beauty, and skin care products:

Irritant Contact Dermatitis

You may simply refer to this as a skin irritation, but your doctor will call it by its medical name, which is irritant contact dermatitis. So what does it mean? In general, this is a mild reaction to common beauty products and results in some burning, stinging, itching, or redness in the area you applied the product. You are at an increased risk for these irritations, including harsher reactions, if your skin is dry or injured. Why? Because your skin has lost some of its natural irritant protection.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

The difference here is if you have a true allergy to a specific ingredient. This often takes more investigation, since you will have to compare product labels in order to see if they have the same ingredients listed. It is, then, a process of elimination.

Regardless, allergic contact dermatitis is a more severe reaction. It is characterized by redness, swelling, itching, or blisters on your skin where you used the product. It can also spread to other parts of your body, though this depends on the severity of your allergy.

The most common ingredients behind this reaction are fragrances and preservatives. Surprisingly, chemicals are most often behind irritant contact dermatitis instead.

If you think fragrances are behind your allergy, look for products specifically marked “fragrance-free”. This gives you the best shot at no reaction. Preservatives, unfortunately, are in any product containing water. They are there to make sure the product does not spoil.
